During my sophomore year of college, I dressed up as a human-sized pair of lungs and traveled to particulate-matter dense regions of Pittsburgh. I donned a nose hat and asked passersby to stick black stickers on me (as a lung) while I talked to them about air quality statistics and its effects on health. At the end of each interaction, I passed out an infographic flyer summarizing the health effects of bad air and how we could protect ourselves. This project was a result of my combined interests in health, biological sciences, and art, and I discovered how much I enjoyed working at the intersection of these fields. Looking back, it was my first medical illustration, using visual problem solving skills to tell an engaging, educational story that could help my audience protect their health.
As a biomedical visualization specialist, I hope to continue my journey of creating visualizations that can teach others about science and bridge communication barriers and gaps in understanding.
